Throwing Thursdays in May 6pm-7:30pm
May 8th, 15th, 22nd, & 29th 6pm-7:30pm at Ravens Wish Gallery
Come learn the basics of wheel thrown pottery with local artist Heather Hansen owner of Pottery By Five. This class is a hands-on pottery experience where participants learn the art of shaping clay on a potter’s wheel. During the class, students are guided through the essential techniques for creating functional and decorative ceramics. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
1. Introduction to Materials and Tools: You’ll learn about the different types of clay, tools like sponges, ribs, and wire cutters, and how they’re used in the process.
2. Centering the Clay: The instructor will demonstrate how to position and center the clay on the wheel, an essential step to ensure your piece comes out balanced.
3. Shaping and Forming: You’ll practice pulling and shaping the clay to create basic forms like bowls, mugs, or vases. Techniques for even walls, smooth finishes, and creative forms will be explored.
4. Trimming and Refining: After your piece has dried slightly (becoming leather-hard), you’ll learn trimming techniques to refine its shape and add details.
5. Drying and Firing: The instructor will explain the drying process and the steps for firing your piece in a kiln to make it durable. Some classes include glazing to add color and texture.
6. Take Home Your Creations: After firing and glazing, you’ll have your own handmade pottery piece to take home and cherish.
This class is perfect for beginners and those looking to enhance their pottery skills. It’s a fun, relaxing way to express creativity while learning an ancient and rewarding craft.
